I seen a few brittle stars in my tank; but this guy is the biggest.

He doesn't come out much; but I guess he wanted some new scenery as he now has a new spot he hangs out.. lol

Really cool!
Thatīs very long arms for a small body.:emoticon (10):

Lol yeah it's all arms.

They are harmless scavengers, Andrew. Only thing that ticks me off is sometimes I see them sticking their arms right into corals mouths to steal food from the coral. However I have learned to feed the starfish first. These are the "mini" variety as some get quite big. They came as a hitch hiker, I've got quite a few of them.

cool. What do you feed them? And how?

They eat everything, literally. They have these little spines on their arms and they sort of "wave" them around. I've seen them catch turds and haul them into their little hidey-hole.

However I turn the powerheads and pump off at feeding time and it's like they KNOW.. So they all get their little arms waving. I feed with a turkey baster most of the time because I like to spot feed everyone, including some corals. Most of the bigger starfish hang around the corals and the ones that cause trouble I give them food so they won't try to pester the corals for it. However I don't feed the rest... At night time they come out and scurry around the aquarium (they move really fast; I turned that video down to half speed) looking for whatever.

So cool, but still looks kinda creeps me out at the same time :) I would be so scared of it touching me if I was cleaning the tank haha

carriej
03-03-2013, 03:24 PM
Yeah they are sharp.. And their legs break off.. Don't ask me how I know this LOL

It's official..... Your tank is possessed! While cool, his slithering is still kinda creepy..... Where are your "guests" coming from?

carriej
03-03-2013, 03:24 PM
They hitchhiked on some coral frags; they are a good addition though so I don't mind them. There is so much life to a SW tank compared to fresh. Im hooked lol

I love brittle stars; I love the way they sort of slow-motion-twirl their arms out! I think he/she is awesome looking :emoticon (30): The marine inverts always get me wanting a salt tank. Great video!

He's a big one! Just hope they stay mini, the regular ones can get about a foot across. lol All mine are staying in the same rock, they won't venture out too far.

You should get a red lens on a flashlight and watch the tank when the lights are out. That's when you really see the cool stuff..

WOW I had no idea stars could move soo fast. Ive seen some pretty crazy ones over the years "free diving" but Ive never seen them move like that! Like a spider or something....

Very cool! Great video, thanks for sharing! I used to really enjoy watching my brittle star waving its arms around, really neat little critters.

carriej
03-04-2013, 12:12 PM
Yep Half speed.. They stay hidden most of the time; but I guess he wanted a new house LOL

Should see when they race across the sand bed. It's a bit terrifying. That guy there is the biggest, most of the others are toonie sized (whole body) or smaller.

DanMc
03-04-2013, 02:46 PM
Dang how big is it exactly? lol Mine are all probably the size of a quarter or so. Guesstimating here..

carriej
03-04-2013, 06:06 PM
His body is about the size of a quarter, I'd say his arms are probably 6-8 inches.. hard to tell because you know what they are like; lol... Could be longer.

However he appears like he is different than the small ones. He has a red body and the other ones have a very small; weird body the same color as their legs. I am wondering if he is not a "regular" brittle star where as the little ones are "mini".

RiverStone
03-04-2013, 06:21 PM
Oh my heavens.... that means when he is all spread out, he is WAY bigger than a dinner plate!

carriej
03-04-2013, 06:24 PM
It's true; but he is so skinny.. His arms are like spaghetti lol. He stays in a hole about as deep as a lipstick container and a little wider.

EDIT

Just realized some of you may not be versed in the sizing of lipstick containers; but I don't know what else to compare it with. soo... Yep.

RiverStone
03-04-2013, 06:29 PM
Okay....... So he is big.... Slithers.... Moves like lightening.... Appeared from nowhere... & is a contortionist.... Aliens I say Carrie, Aliens.... :emoticon (13): But I will give you that he is extremely cool :emoticon (41):

carriej
03-04-2013, 06:36 PM
LOL... Honestly I had no idea he was that big. I just seen like 2-3 inches of his little arms swaying about. I almost had a heart attack when he came out like that!

And everything is always aliens when it comes to this hobby!

DanMc

6-8" legs, sounds like a regular brittle star to me. That's even cooler!

carriej
03-04-2013, 08:33 PM
Certainly could be; I am definitely no expert... :)

He is so skinny though. Next time he comes out I'll have to get a better look at him instead of trying to film him LOL...

PS.. Dan where does one get one of these red lights?

DanMc
03-04-2013, 08:37 PM
just take a flashlight, and wrap the end tightly with red plastic (Ben's bread bag works but something darker red would be better) The critters can't see the red light so they don't scatter.

Convict
03-04-2013, 08:39 PM
Thanks for that DanMc... I'll be doing the same thing haha

Kribber
03-04-2013, 08:55 PM
I don't get it??? didn't you buy him? you should know what it is if you bought it...lol:emoticon (46):

SW seem more and more fun to me, you put some live rock and stuff in.
And suddenly you have a bunch of unspecified critters lurking about...a bit like those surprizes the used to put in the corn flake boxes. Just a bit more creepy and crawly. :emoticon (25):

LOL muvin!

And yes some surprises are good and some are bad; luckily I have had mostly good/neutral hitch hikers.
