As promised some photos:

I rescued an old stand from kijiji for $15:

The thing was beaten pretty bad. I am fairly certain it was dragged behind a truck and then used as a boat.

But after a $6 can of flat black and a $2 handle:

Not bad for $25.
I'll build some replacement divider / shelves for the sides later.

So I couldn't resist a $49 Fluval Flora from PU (IE I bought 2).
Picked up a second light for each one as well.
Not positive whats going in the second one yet.

The scrape that's in this one right now is only temporary while I figure out exactly what components I want.

For the time being it's:

+/- 34 Cherry shrimp (Neocaridina heteropoda)
2 Otos (Otocinclus macrospilus)
1 Horned Nerite Snail (Clithon flavovirens)

Rigid Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum)
Small Amazon Sword (Echinodorus amazonicus)
Marimo Moss Ball (Aegagropila linnaei)
Corkscrew Val (Vallisneria americana var. biwaensis)
A piece of slate with Java Moss attached with crinoline
A small piece of Mopani
A small chunk Fossilized Wood

Right now the Nano filter is still in there but I'm investigating options, ideally I would like to hide as much as possible.

All the shrimp seem happy. Everyone is molting and most of my females are berried.

A few different sources now. Trying to keep the gene pool as deep as possible. And yes, I would guess I'm about to have a population explosion on my hands very shortly. Luckily my hospital tank is holding some plants ATM that could use a good cleaning if they get too out of control.

I like your little setup with the twin tanks. Any ideas what might be going in the second tank yet?

Things left to do:

1. Properly scape it (obviously)
- Likely some root wood / samatran / mangrove tree deal. With a planted carpet.

2. Investigate other filtration options
- I hate the fluval nano. Its a decent design for what it is with a spray bar, but I find it loud, cumbersome and dislike the media options.
- I would love to have an external canister for them, but it will likely be to much throughput.
- HOBs are unlikely as the background and lid will be in the way.

3. Build moss inserts
- The foam 3D backgrounds have these little indents in them. I am considering covering / filling them in with moss mounted to plastic canvas.

Very nice, I love those little tanks. Seriously, I've said it before and I'll say it again but I wish I had snatched up a second one!

Will yesterday was a good day.

Was able to pick up 2 lightly used Fluval 105 for $30 each.

Was a little worried that the little nano tanks would be mini water tornadoes with all that water movement, but they seem perfectly fine.

Even better, the first of my cherry shrimplets were spotted

I love your set up, I have one of these tanks as well but haven't set it up yet. I had been wondering if the filter was going to need to be replaced, it's nice to see some feedback on it. Do you have a heater in there as well?

The Fluval Nano filters are surprisingly good for what they are.

They're cheap (It's free with the tank). They move a ton of water (for such a small filter). Spray bar helps diffuse and direct that flow where you want it. You can set the flow rate, but i did find if you cut it back much its gets a rattle.

I removed the big block of BioFoam and dropped some BioMax rings inside. You can even get a little charcoal insert for them if thats your thing. I did find the inlet slots a little wide for shrimp so I stuffed them with some filter floss (Save yourself money and use Polyester Fiber Fill aka pillow case stuffing).

The spraybar is very tight fitting, especially into the motor housing. Be careful with it or it will crack. As well the canister body and motor housing done mate very well, there is a lot of slop there.

If you do want to replace it you will have to leave the cover off or modify it.

Finnex, Zoomed, Fluval, & Eheim all make external cannisters small enough for it. I didn't really investigate HOB.

I ended up moving both my Fluval Nano to my plant grow tank since I bought the 105s

As far as heaters go, if yer looking for cheap and small. The Marina C25 Compact Heater / Fluval 25-watt Compact Aquarium Heater work great for me and hold the tanks at 25 degrees C. There is no adjustment but that was a good temp for me anyway. They're small can't be broken like glass ones.

Yeah the only think I don't like about this setup is that I don't see a lot of my RCS as they spend time foraging under the dwarf sag.

Still need to pick up a second light and change over from the sponge filter to the AC20
