Well the wife decided she wanted a cichlid tank, so while she hems and haws over the fish I figured I'd start the tank up.

Picked up a new 75G from FINatics (another great experience, as always).

Got it all unpacked last night, put the stand together, and got it painted.

It's up to the wife, I think she's settled on either Labs or Kennyi.

Yup that should be in my rec room! Nice can't wait to see what you will do with my tank (lol). You going to build foam rocks on the grate?

Nope 50 lbs of lace rock caves

They've all been scrubbed / rinsed. Cooking them on the stove as we speak :)

Its just egg crate.

Its the plastic mesh they use for fluorescent ceiling fixtures.
$10 bucks at any building supplies store.

It's good for keeping the rocks of the glass.

I think I'll use a mixture of Pool Filter Sand and Eco-Complete (for cichlids).

Well the rock is in.
The Val is planted (Thanks for the Goldie).

Now just to let it run in a bit, clear up and stabilize the PH. Well that and get some new 3M strips to move the art further up the wall :)

Between the Eco-Complete and the seeded media from my other tank the cycle should be extremely short if I even see one.

I haven't epoxied the rock yet, but I'm not sure it's staying where it is.

Lovely fish! I have always been a fan of the Kenyi blue and the males are pretty smashing in their yellow as well. It makes for a nice contrast. I'll keep my fingers crossed you get a nice ratio of males to females when they grow out :D

Yeah its OK.

Needs a good cleaning, and I'll have to re-arrange the rock work tomorrow.

The Val I got from Goldie is starting to melt but since I was away I don't know if its from the wife's maintenance routine, an imbalance or if the Kenyi have taken a liking to it.

Yeah I added some more lighting yesterday, hoping that will help.

Not really concerned about algae growth in there as the Kenyi are natural algae grazers.

I have never had any luck with my Vals......supposed to be an easy starter plant but it is the only one I have ever had any issues with. I can't grow it no matter how many times I have tried lol I hope the new lighting works well for you!

Yeah its weird all my "fancy" types of vals grow awesome, but these regular vals are trying.

Goldie must have the touch with them. She dropped me off a ton, and for the first few months they thrived. Now all of a sudden melt setting in.

But it maybe the Kenyi chomping on them when I'm not looking.

Nice setup, As for the Val I put 3 HUGE val plants into my Mbuna tank, it was completely eaten in a matter of days they loved the stuff. I feed trimmings from my planted tanks and excess duckweed too them on a regular basis as well so mine have really developed an appetite for plants I can't grow anything with mine.

Yeah I am just in the process of fixing it now.

I needed to make some rock work changes anyway, so while there I had a look at the plants (its tough to really see with 150 lbs of rock in the way).
I think what happened is all of the original plants goldie gave me melted and what's left is all of the offspring.

Here are the poor little guys trying to figure out what happened to their home.

You'll have to clean out some of those spare males soon, Once one goes dominate he'll beat on the others in my experience Kenyi are one of the most aggressive toward their own kind.

Yeah I'll just be giving them away until I'm down to 2-3. I already have 1 offer to take some.

DevonC
09-15-2013, 01:46 PM
Ya I'd go with 3 males in a tank that size, 2 of them will likely split the tank down the middle and form 2 breeding groups the 3rd will free range tring to steal away females . I'd suspect more then that and they will probably just kill each other down too the 3 male mark, and with only 2 one might decide to take over the whole tank, since he doesn't have too worry about other males going after his females while he hunts down the only other competition.

That just my experience with them any way, not all fish are the same . Are you going to add a second species ??

Nuggs
09-15-2013, 01:49 PM
My plan at this point was to keep it species only, but I'm open to suggestions.

This is my first african setup, and of course I choose the hard way with Kenyi :)

DevonC
09-15-2013, 02:05 PM
Kenyi are great species, especially if your going species only. They also are pretty easy to mix as long as the fish involved dont have yellow/red males. They'll destroy Yellow lab's , and they will pick fight's with red zebra's and then loose, they are sore looser mine just keep trying until the zebra kills them they want to be THE dominate yellow fish or die trying.

If you choose a species that has Blue female then worst case is the kenyi will occasionally cross breed with them, but you can cull those fry if it bothers you.

If you stick with species that dont have yellow colored males then the kenyi tend to ignore them unless they enter a specific cave/territory then the kenyi will quickly chase them out. They are incredibly territorial aggressive but only claim a relatively small area too breed in that they stick too it.

There are HUNDREDS of options with Mbuna, even a few hap's you could mix in.

Goldie

Fish look really great, I love the blue and yellow together, to bad they don't get along, they look really nice in that big group.

As for the vals, they are wicked for melting, but generally come back. The magic touch for me is dollar store jobes fert sticks, haha. Tried the expensive ones but the 99 cent ones worked just as well. If the fish get a taste for them though, I think you're out of luck. Been there, nothing saves from a hungry tummy ;)

DevonC
09-15-2013, 02:39 PM
If you wanted to stick with the blue/yellow look maybe look into Melanochromis Auratus, they males are DARK blue/black females yellow/white, opposite of kenyi and completely different pattern/body shape.

In a tank that size I'd only recommend one auratus male and a dozen females. They wont bother the kenyi and kenyi wont bother them, cross breeding between the 2 is also VERY unlikly, only thing to really watch with auratus is that males are aggressive breeders need at least 10-12 females other wise he'll run them to death. Also VERY aggressive toward males of there own kind much like kenyi except they dont stick to the cave and wait for a male come into that territory, auratus will patrol the tank looking for other male auratus and chase them down.

Just finished cleaning, replanting the Val, and re-modeling the rock work.
Everyone is still in there trying to figure out who's in charge and what cave belongs to who.

Salt??

I would love to, but I don't think its feasible with me being short notice deployed all the time. Would be too much for the wife to take care of, especially with a baby on the way in January.

If I did salt it would probably be a 30 to experiment with before I went big.

Convict
11-25-2013, 02:47 PM
Congrats on the baby :) If you have a good skimmer and an automatic top off and a dosing system you could probably gone for months and not have to do any maintenance on the tank.... Your tank would need some scrubbing from the algae on the glass when you got back but that is it :) Do it!!! hehe

I just wasn't feeling it. Don't get me wrong, nice fish, decent setup. Just wasn't happy with it.

Ideally I would love a reef tank. But when you get 2 days notice for a 20 sail, its much easier to talk the wife into a couple of quick water changes with fresh.
