    Refugium sump question

How important are the baffle pieces between compartments?
I`ll lose about 4 1/2" of refugium space if I design my sump with baffles.
Aside from micro bubble reduction what else do they do?
If they help with some noise reduction I guess they would be a must, but what else?

You only need the baffles before the return pump, so it should only take up about 2" plus the thickness of the glass.

But as to you question they don't really do anything except capture micro bubbles.

The baffles can serve as bubble diffusers if placed correctly, so your main display isn't plagued with them. They can also serve to hold more mechanical media if needed.

I don't have baffles, and there's no bubbles in my display, but my skimmer has it's own tank, then to a larger refugium where it is pumped back up to my tank,
you could try simply dividing your tank for your skimmer and see what happens, assuming you can add the second piece to the baffle later if needed

Thanks for the replies guys! So one baffle will be enough then just before the return pump. I was going to put two baffles in my design but one will definitely be better for my refugium space. It should give me just over 12" for my refugium compartment.

Just to be clear, when I hear baffle I think of the single sheet of glass, the 3 sheets in place make a bubble trap, So yeah, one bubble trap is enough.

Thanks for clarifying DanMc. I said baffle just to simplify but meant the 3 sheet bubble trap.
