    Turtles

I know this is the Fish section :)

But I am curious - are those little painted turtles we could get in the 1960s obtainable in other parts of the Maritimes than Nova Scotia?

(I know why they are not sold - slight salmonella risk - I'm just curious.)

I assume you mean RES - Red Eared Slider?

They used to be available in NB. Not sure if they still are.

You're not allowed to bring them across the border though.

Yes you can get turtles in NB, not true painted turtles since they are a native species but everything else is fine.

I used to keep a Dwarf Caiman (P.Trig) AWSOME little croc. A Hell of a bite on them though way worse then any other animal ( and i've been bitten by a ridiculous variety of animals in for comparison lol)

Not sure what exact variety they might have been, but they were very common as pets way back then.

Yes , i see red eared sliders , maps, reeves & yellow bellies on a regular basis in the shops all small toonie sized ones except the occasional returned RES.

They also tend to have tort's , i generally see 3-4" Herman's, greeks, Russians , leopards and red footed's.

It sucks you can't have them on PEI. They are not native here so they don't allow them as pets. I assume its because they don't want people releasing them into the wild.

I can't recall a time when you could buy pet turtles on PEI, but Axolotl are also on the list of prohibited pets, and I know there are a few pet stores that sell them. :)

I used to have 4 Red-eyed Sliders in a small pond in my basement. Lots of fun and an interesting animal to have as a pet. I made a small out-door are for them during the warmer months. Then one summer racoons got them and ate them. I never understood why they are banned in Nova Scotia?

Due to the chance of kids getting infected with salmonella from handling the cute little ones at the pet shop. I used to keep red ear sliders, painted turtles, and I had a snapping turtle for a period of time. I never caught anything from them, but I did get Salmonella food poisoning from eating KFC!! High risk factor there just from by entering the place lol. I was sick for a few weeks and had to be put on IV at one point. I wish KFC would get banned from NS instead haha.

My mother spent two days in the hospital from eating at KFC. When she called to complain they sent her a free chicken bucket coupon.....she never used it!
