More new additions ! Channa Pleurophthalma

After years of searching for these guys I finally own some!!

These guys arrived last night . it's been a rough start, of the 15 shipped lost I lost 1/3 in shipping leaving me with a group of 10 hopefully they'll all adjust nicely to their new home.

This species is unique among snakeheads in the fact that it actually is known to do better in groups and is tolerant of other large fish so long as they aren't seen as a potential meal!

They are settling in so I didn't want to bother them too much and onły snapped this one pic with my cell for now. In a few days after a few meals I'll get some better pics! Maybe even a video of the pack hunting !!

They are 3" now, starting them in a 100, they might get a pool this summer , I'm not sure what's happening this spring yet. I really only have room for one backyard pool, well room for two but my girlfriend insists that I leave one for her to swim in and she won't swim with fish lol .

I also have to test out a DIY solar heater too see if I can maintain tropical temps outside. I believe I can but haven't tested it yet , if that works then I'll have to choose between giving it to Pleuros or to the RTG to tan his colours for the summer . Moving the RTG out is most likely to happen if I can , it'll give him amazing color and allows me to shut down that tank and move it so I can build bigger!!

How is your fire eel doing? I purchased the last one at Riverscape and Lee the eel is fantastic. Very cool addition to my tank for sure. I cannot believe how fast it is growing and the colors are coming in nicely. My daughter has always wanted a snake so I got a water snake lol

The eel was doing great last time I spotted him, both he and the rope fish have a tendency to disappear for months on end lol

Thanks and yes! I will be trying to breed them. So far nobody has ever bred this species in captivity so I hope to be the first !

I attribute it to stress and poor shipping. The species is known to be fragile at these small sizes and these came from a shop who imported then from Asia directly. They were picked up the day they arrived spent a week in my buddies tank and were shipped again by a third party shop as the original shop does not ship.

To add to that the shipper did not pack them as I requested . Instead if individually he put 5 per bag, he also used an over sized styro with only one heat-pack so they were quite cold, those 2 factors combined was more then they could handle. The first ones to die just died they looked normal with minor damage from fights. The last 2 to go had some fungus devoloping but you could tell they never acclimated they just held on long enough for secondary infection to take hold.

I now only have 6 , no deaths in the last couple days though (knock on wood) remainders are active and eating well with fat bellies, one is a bit skinny but it was the last to start eating ,another has a wound/ infection of some sort on it's face (Im thinking/hopeing it's just a wound)it appeared out of know were but is healing /shrinking and it's very active and eating so should recover.

I'll try to snap some pics, in the end only 4 survived but they are fat healthy and growing well. Unfortunately thery are in a heavily planted tank that is also heavily coated in algea so pics are pretty tough to take but I'll try lol
