ECAS plant contest

The plants are in!
I was by Aqua Nation today. Unfortunately, the lotus bulbs were not shipped by the manufacturer... however, the Crypt pontederiifolia look awesome. It seems as though most folks were interested in this plant anyway... lotus bulbs are readily available throughout the year, while I have never seen this Crypt for sale in metro.

The supplier didn't have the other Crypt in stock, although we could consider trying the C. blassii some other time.

Matt has the Crypts set aside, and we would appreciate it if you could drop by the store and pick up your plant by next Friday. You will just need to mention your name (Matt has the list) and that the plant is from the contest supply.

If anyone wanted more than one plant, please let me know ASAP.
As soon as you get your Crypt in your tank, please post a pic in this thread, as well as something in the pic that would give a relative sense of size (so we can track how much the plant has grown).
Also if you can give a brief overview of your tank (ie substrate, CO2 or Excel or not, lighting, fish load and type etc) that would be great. Especially the folks with low light setups... show people how easy Crypts are to grow.

I think after 6 months of everyone getting their plants, we could have final pictures voted on. Perhaps awards for:

-    largest Crypt
-    best pic of a fish with the contest plant
-    best looking plant in a low light, non-CO2 tank
-    best aquascape incorporating the plant.

Any other ideas?
Dave and Chad, I plan on sending your plants on the bus this weekend. Please Email me with pick up information/ phone #s etc.
Let me know if any other questions.

Thanks again to Matt and Aqua Nation for special ordering the Crypts and making them available for an extremely reasonable price (note that of course there won't be the usual ECAS discount on the contest plants, since we're already getting a special price).

Re: ECAS plant contest

I have my crypt in my low light 45, which has 96 watts PC lighting, Flourite, CO2, lots of platies and BBA. I'll post a pic as soon as I get around some technical issues, but I think most of the plants were the same size.

I would hope that there are a few more folks that will be posting here in the next few days.
Thanks again to Matt at AN for helping us out with the contest.

Re: ECAS plant contest

I have mine but it is currently in a holding tank, as I'm redoing the tank it is going into.  Hope to have it done by the weekend with some picks to follow.

Re: ECAS plant contest

Good idea. It's best to plan what you want for a crypt and leave it there. They don't like to be moved once they get established (which may take a couple months). Dave is trying to find a place for his plant as I type smile

Re: ECAS plant contest

Sorry I have been so long getting pics posted. The camera is fixed, so here goes. I picked up a couple of plants, and put them in different parts of the tank. I haven't had a lot of time to spend on the tank as of late,... no sure if this was the reason, but the crypts really struggled at first. One of them is making quite a comeback.

The plant in the background is new; it's Rotala sp. 'Nanjenshan'.

This little fellow has lost all of its leaves, and is just barely visible in the foreground. I thought it would be good to follow it's progress over the next few months.

I add KNO3 and K2HPO4 twice weekly, traces twice weekly, and 5mL Excel once daily. I don't measure anything... just watch the fish and plants and judge accordingly.

Re: ECAS plant contest

Well this thread hasn't been that active lately... I'd like to post a pic of my crypt, and encourage others to do the same.
My thoughts on this plant are... well, it's a crypt. Very attractive but slow growing, even with CO2. It seemed to take a little longer getting established than what I am used to. But it is now coming along nicely, as you can see.

My regret is that I planted it so close to the front of the tank. At the time, everywhere else was crowded.

Anyway, I'd like to see some pics from those who agreed to participate in the contest. Details of your setup would be appreciated as well. I am sure folks with low light and no CO2 had some luck with this plant as well.

If you have any ideas for what you'd like to see in an upcoming plant contest, please let me know via pm.

Edit: Thanks again to Aqua Nation for helping ECAS out with the contest.

Re: ECAS plant contest

I'll get some pictures up tomorrow, I have actually had a bit of luck the past few months or so with this...

However, on a side note.. Lock your doors... I am really going on a plant raid
