Bio Filter Media?
Hi All,
Wondering what others are using for BIO MEDIA in their barrell filters? Looking for a nice and cheap yet effective material. In my smaller filters I use "bio balls" that I purchased from the petstore...they were ridiculously priced and I'm not paying that much money to fill my barrell.
I see Stan in Yarmouth uses "something" white in his barrells, but, I can't tell what that is??? That being said, after reading his koishack page for his pond construction... I doubt he was selecting the "cheapest" product either......
Cheers
Phillip

Re: Bio Filter Media?
Stan is using a bio-media called Kaldness in a fluidized moving bed bio. There are air diffusers below the media that continually roll/boil it. These are almost as good as Trickle Towers for providing O2 to the bacteria. Basic submerged bio-media are nothing more than NO3 factories.
I use both moving bed and TT's. The TT's have kitchen scrubbies in them...700 of them. I also use Matala matting in the smaller one.
We also both have settling chambers/vortexs before any mechanical filter media and then bio's

Re: Bio Filter Media?
you can use anything really that has alot of surface area and is fish safe. Pot scrubbies are high on my list for when a large area needs to be filled with bio-media.

Any course sponge would be the cheapest in the long run, as you can continue to rince and reuse it for a very long time.
Although filter floss is cheaper initially, it would have to be replaced often, so in the long run, the sponge is cheaper.
You can by sponge in various sizes depending on what you need.
