Calcium supplement for snails
I know this is not a food question, but I'm not sure where to put it.
I want to take good care of my snails, and I was wondering if liquid calcium for marine aquariums was safe to use in freshwater aquariums for snail?
The ingredients are only de-ionized water and calcium chloride. It suggests 1/4 to 1 tsp per 50 gallons daily for coral, so how much/ often should I use it for snail shells?
Thanks!

Re: Calcium supplement for snails
There would be no problem using it and I would just use the same dosage. Test your GH levels 1st though to make sure you even need it. GH should be up in the 80ppm range for most tanks

Re: Calcium supplement for snails
Instead of the coral I've started using oyster shell in my filter and it is a HOB. I'll let you know how it goes. Lots of people use Kents liquid calcium. You can also feed them calcium rich veggies as well. Judging by her pictures pigmalian's snails are beautiful. Mine not so much, so take what I have to say with a grain of salt and listen to pigmalian.

Thanks for all the info! I think I will pick up a GH test kit. Can you buy suitable coral at a regular pet store if I decide to do that?
I noticed one of my zebra snails might be getting a small fissure, so I wanted to prevent that as much as possible. I have snails in all my tanks now!

Yes salties use it but sometimes you have to buy big bags. I got my oyster shell in the bird department and paid a couple of bucks for it. I also put tums in the tank. It gives them white poo but it seems to help as well.

Re: Calcium supplement for snails
I don’t raise snails any more and never kept aquatic ones... But a few years back i did raised African Giant land snails, as you can imagine they use a PILE of calcium, for them i used to keep cuttle fish bone in the tank, it's cheap and a great source of calcium...
Dont know if that helps but it's an easy solution!

Re: Calcium supplement for snails
Quick Question here
I bought some coral for my snails ( 5 small pieces). I read above to put it in the filter, but I am wondering if I can just put it in the tank instead of the filter.
Its going in a 36G with some livebearers, some zebra snails and corydoras.
Any information would be great.
Thanks

Right in the tank is fine...

Re: Calcium supplement for snails
I kinda like the look of it.
not sure if I will keep it or not
Its in a tank with extremely small sand, so it does stand out.
time will tell what I do

Re: Calcium supplement for snails
The only thing to watch for is the fish getting scratched. Coral is very sharp and FW fish are not used to it; this can be a problem with larger fish more so than small ones... also watch what it might do to the pH

Re: Calcium supplement for snails
I was wondering about the pH as well.
But no change yet, but it has not been in there long. I am thinking about moving it to the filter since I do have some loaches that might hurt themselves on it
