Tinfoil Barb Behaviour
Hello,
A customer contacted me and had a question that I frankly do not know the answer to. I am hoping someone on here does. She said that her two tinfoil barbs (couple of inches large) are rubbing up against each other, the gravel, ornaments, etc. My first thought was external parasites, but she says she cannot see anything on them and the rest of her fish are fine. She did start treating them with melafix and an ich remover, but I suggested that she stops that treatment since she does not know if they have any parasites or not.
My other thought was maybe dominance or something....but not too sure about that. I have never kept tinfoil barbs myself.
Just wondering if anyone has ever had their tinfoil barbs act this way or has any knowledge on the subject.
Thanks everyone and Happy New Year

Re: Tinfoil Barb Behaviour
I have not seen them, so I can only go by what she said.."that there are no signs of anything on their scales"
Any ideas on what she should do?
other than just watch them and see if it turns mean or if there becomes any signs of disease. She has them for some other barbs, some plecos and some bala sharks. I do not know what size tank they are in now, but I let her know that she will need a tank well over 100G down the road when they all grow.

Re: Tinfoil Barb Behaviour
You were right in telling her to knock off the meds..........I would want to know the exact water parameters, how long she's had these fish, has she added any new fish to the tank. Fish don't flash on tank objects for no reason and not breeding.
PS there are all kinds of parasites that are not visible especially to an untrained eye

Re: Tinfoil Barb Behaviour
I was hoping to get a reply from you Graham:)
I will try to get some info from her.
I also know there are lots of parasites, but it would be hard to get info from her about them if they are not visible.
Parasites are not my specialty but I do think they are neat. not fun to have, but very impressive organisms.
I will post more info when I get some

Re: Tinfoil Barb Behaviour
new updates
She is testing her water with the test kits that she has. pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. I will be testing her water for other things on Thursday (unless this is all the parameters you think will help, Graham).
She bought 2 tinfoils barbs on December 11th and bought two more on December 18th. She has not had any new fish other than them. It is only two of the barbs (she thinks) that do this rubbing, not all four.
I will post the water parameters once she calls me back.

Re: Tinfoil Barb Behaviour
okay.
She got back to me faster than I thought.
Here are the results
Ammonia-0ppm
pH-7.5
nitrite 0.3 mg/L
nitrate 20ppm
Let me hear any ideas.
Thanks

Re: Tinfoil Barb Behaviour
Aaah new fish... 2 things.....the odds are she has a ''minor'' parasite problem. These fish were not QT'd and stressed out from being in a store and then a new tank. So any ambient parasite levels get raised to minor levels. Then the 2nd thing is the possible nitrite level. That reading is within the kits error level, but it shouldn't be there if it is correct.
When fish flash something is always irritating...usually parasites but it can be water. Fish may not show parasites symptoms on the body in low levels They may be in the gills. Parasites like oodinium, costia, Chil or flukes can all be there
So I'd give the tank a decent water change, and use a shot gun med with formalin and malachite green in it, following the bottle instructions. Toss the Fix junk. I wouldn't worry about the NO2 and adding salt at this point but I would watch that level.

Re: Tinfoil Barb Behaviour
Thank you very much
I know of one medicine with malachite green in it
Its Ich-X
I have had luck with that medicine at work. Never used it at home before
http://uskoi.com/ich-x.htm
Do you know anything about it? Would it help the situation?
I will pass on the info to the customer.
Thanks again
