Bettas in general

I do not have a certain fish that needs rescue. Just bettas in general

This is what sparked my post tonight

http://fredericton.kijiji.ca/c-pets-acc … Z161001271

"perfect for bettas"

I;m pretty sure its not. Its almost the opposite

Its small and round
no filter
lack of surface area for breathing
no hiding spots
Would not retain a constant temperature very well

just to name a few.

I don't know where people are getting these things at? I know we do not sell them where I work and My only guess is Wal Mart or something, but these things disgust me

I made a post on kijiji that I am getting a lot of positive support from

http://fredericton.kijiji.ca/c-pets-acc … Z161001836

Thats my rant. Anyone can join in if they want.
I'm going to bed now haha

Happy Thanksgiving everyone

Re: Bettas in general

I never even thought about the light changing the temperature a lot. That makes it even worse.
As for the speaker tank....who the **** came up with that idea? That is pretty much the dumbest idea I have ever heard.

I stopped someone where I worked yesterday from buying a baby net for a betta. We do not sell tanks where I work because we can't compete with Kijiji for prices, so I advised them to get at least a 5 gallon tank off kijiji (bigger the better), cycle it and come back and I would gladly sell them a betta. I did have a long chat with them about fish because they thought that bettas needed to be in a small space and would not survive in  a large tank. So I think they will go get a tank and cycle it.

I don't think I am being too mean about it, since I do have the right to refuse to sell animals to anyone if I feel it will not be treated right where I work. Which makes sense because if the betta died in the baby net, we would jut have an unhappy customer (possibly discouraged from owning fish again) and a dead fish. So everyone loses.

But I can't get over the speaker tank....Its just aweful.

Re: Bettas in general

I admit, I do not have the best tanks for bettas, some being 3 gallons, but the bettas do seem happy. They are bred in a 5 gallon before, lol.
I give a lot bit of info before I sell anything. Be it fish, rabbits, hamsters or even pet food. Even if its just the basics, I think it helps.

I always like positive support.
Thanks

Re: Bettas in general

I have had some interesting replies to my ad on kijiji and now it has been shut down for some reason. I am asking kijiji why. but these are some of the  the best stories I heard from repliers.

bettas live in puddles and jump puddle to puddle. They breed in puddles and their eggs hatch once it rains again ( i'm thinking at this moment maybe this person is thinking about triops, not bettas). They then went on to tell me that if bettas go in anything larger than bowls, they will die. It will stress them out because they are afraid of large areas.

I have had a few people that have stated that bettas need only round bowls due to vision. If they are in anything rectangular or non circular they will die because they come from puddles in the wild and puddles are round.

My favorite and frankly scariest reply is that bettas need to live in bowls only because they need algae and "stuff" to build up on the sides because they only eat plants, algae and bacteria. They will not eat meat because they can't digest it.

I tell people to come visit here and get some information from betta experts (which I am not) on this forum, so hopefully some showed up since I have no idea where they are getting their information from because a lot of it is scarily incorrect.

Just thought I would give an update. Its funny to hear somethings, but also scary at the same time.

Have a good one everyone

Re: Bettas in general

when we first reopened the store, one of the 150's in the window had only a betta in it. We thought he would love it and go crazy, it sat in a corner and hid. Let down! haha

My Betta loves his 30 gal tank.  He is all over the place smile  He does have a few tank mates though.

Re: Bettas in general

I know this sounds really weird, but the pair I was breeding, the male would only look after the eggs if the female was in there. So I did leave the female in there (no one hurt anyone nor did anyone eat the babies). I have yet to remove her. They do not spawn anymore, but they do live happily in a 20 gallon with one algae shrimp (soon to be more).

They are like an old married couple. Swimming together (no one hurts anyone). The male tries to get some action by flaring but never gets it now since he does not have a good bubble nest.

Fun to watch though and easier on me

That's 'cause he's got good breeding and a great personality wink

You are exactly right smile  I wanted to post a picture of him for my profile but I can't seem to figure it out LOL!!  Someone will need to guide me through it!!

Take a picture, go in paint and cut a 100 pixels by 100 pixels part of that picture. Copy that part, paste in another paint. Then save and load. smile

Re: Bettas in general

It looks cool, but guessing its not that large.
if they were larger, with a filter and heater that would be awesome to have a wall of bettas
