Lesson learned!

Hi guys..

Well about 5 minutes ago I noticed one of my super large apple snails wasn't moving. These snails are almost the size of my palm and I've had them for about 4 years give or take. I scooped him out... THE SMELL!

OH MY GOD!

I've never had a snail die before.. I think I almost threw up, actually I may have thrown up. I have heard of people talk about the smell.. but I was kinda like well jeez, can't be that bad... No, it is.. I can't get the smell of my hands either because I cupped my hands under the net to keep the water from going everywhere.

Dead snails smell like campground outhouses.. GROSS!

No more snails for me -- ever..

Re: Lesson learned!

I had one die on me too last week, I plucked him out of the tank with my hand.... Bad Idea!!!!! My hand stuck sooo bad, I did gag but didn't throw up... ugh it was soo nasty.. I must've washed my hand a billion times.. and the smell still hasn't left my memory.. sad I think it was the worst thing I've ever smelled before.

Re: Lesson learned!

I don't think I will ever forget that smell... It's like nothing else.. The gross part is when I took the snail out, his insides were literally dripping back into the tank.... GAG

Just did a big water change in that tank -- thank god it's just a small tank.

My other snail is leaving my house in about ten minutes, I'm going to drop him off at my fish store, because someday he will die -- and I'm not having it!

I used to keep GALS, (giant africian land snails) and i know what you mean, What a smell... with the land snails you'd smell it through the whole house! no water to mask it !

Re: Lesson learned!

I didn't throw up when my first brigg died, but I certainly got the worse of it. Big *SNIFF* from less than an inch away. Probably the worst part about dead snails is how the smell is so bad it goes through your nose and you actually taste it. Bleah.
